Mauricio and I met exactly seven years ago on June 5th, 2004 in Cancun, Mexico. I was on vacation there for my birthday and he worked at the hotel I was staying in. He was in charge of the mini club and entertained the children. Needles to say, I thought it was adorable and fell for him right away. We stayed in touch after I left for about six months. During that time, I visited him in Mexico, met his entire family, and we got to know each other better. After this, it was set that we would be together and so he moved to Canada.
The past seven years have been great—filled with so much laughter and joy. We’ve been through good times and bad. We’ve built a business together and still managed to love each other through everything. He proposed to me at his grandfather’s house in Mexico. I was serenaded by a trio of mariachis to romantic Mexican songs and he asked me to marry him. We got married about a year after that, on June 11th, 2011. The wedding was beautiful, simple and very personal. My dress was handmade by my mother’s seamstress who has made all of my most important dresses since I was a child. We had many handmade decorations thanks to the help of my mother, brother, aunt and best friends. We wanted to integrate some Mexican and Italian traditions to our special day. The theme referenced the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead and we had a candy buffet filled with authentic Mexican candies. Also, my bouquet was composed of herbs like in the Roman tradition symbolizing fertility and abundance. The food was a mix of Italian and Latin flavors and was served as a stand up dinner-cocktail. During the ceremony, we wanted to salute the members of our family who were no longer present with us. We saluted my father, our grandparents and some aunt and uncles who were very dear to us. My husband’s aunt who was his witness and my brother, who was mine, read out the names of the people we missed. After this my husband and I each had a bouquet of balloons, which we released. It was a very windy day and we thought the balloons were not going to make it through the trees but with a gust of wind, they took off almost like they knew where they had to go. It was extremely emotional and the most beautiful moment at our wedding.
